Greenhouse For All
Welcome to Greenhouse for All, a grassroots NGO dedicated to supporting vulnerable Syrian refugees in the Bekaa Valley Region of Lebanon. Our journey began with a simple act: planting vegetable gardens in refugee camps. As we tended to the soil, we found ourselves surrounded by eager children, each with a story to share.
As we got to know the kids and listen to their stories, we came to understand that most were not attending school and had never even step foot in a classroom. The children in these refugee camps seemed to be experiencing stress from chronic understimulation and the every day boredom of life in settlements. We observed behaviors associated with trauma from the events that led them to flee from everything that was normal and known to them. Many of `our` children are living with deprivation, and the loss of family members, many having witnessed atrocities that are unimaginable for us as adults.
In response to this need, we launched an initiative born out of a shared determination to provide education to those who had been denied it. Starting with a makeshift classroom in an unoccupied tent, we began teaching basic subjects to a small group of children.
Even without access to a classroom we were determined to teach!
The enthusiasm and eagerness to learn were palpable, motivating us to expand our reach. Our efforts led us to connect with more children across local settlements, eventually culminating in the establishment of a proper school building. With dedicated teachers recruited from the refugee community, we created a nurturing environment where children could not only learn but also begin to heal from the traumas they had endured.
At Greenhouse for All, we believe that education is not just about imparting knowledge but also about instilling hope and fostering a sense of belonging. Through our school, we strive to create a space where every child feels valued and empowered to envision a brighter future for themselves.
